One of the 20+ Behemoths you will face in the game |
Ever wondered if monster hunter was your kind of game, but you're a PC player, so you never had the chance to get your hands on it. Luckily for you, I've stumbled and tried best way to figure out what you've missed on, and whether or not you'd have liked MH. That game is called Dauntless, it's a boss game in a box, under a free-to-play business model.
What is it exactly?
This game is a very classic yet refreshing take on the monster hunt genre, and underdevelopped type of game farmers love to play. The goal is pretty simple, yet very fun. Group with up to 4 people or play alone if you feel like it, and go and fight monsters that have differents attacks and patterns, and pick the best loadout to defeat them in the most efficient way. Those monsters will fly, throw spikes at you, or straight up stomp your face in order to get rid of the annoying "Slayers" (yeah, that's you, or your job if you prefer).
Here's how the system roughly works.
You pick one of the 5 weapon types, learn the combos, master them by fighting Behemoths.
Gather resources and materials by killing them and picking flowers and other stuff.
With these materials, craft potions and better armor and weapons, to face stronger and more challenging beasts.
Rinse and repeat until you get every item you want, which, in these kind of games, "games as a service", like League, Smite and others for instance, where new content is consistantly added in order to keep the playerbase interested.
Should you give it a try?
If you're a monster hunter fan, then you will definitely find a familiar yet different experience so why not give it a try. It's a fun game, with slick graphics.
It's free, and doesn't seem to push a lot of microtransactions, over about 4-5 hours of gameplay, I haven't noticed any kind of in game shop. (I'm blind and I was mostly busy picking up flowers).
Do not just give in to bad mouthing and people calling it a "poor man's Monster Hunter". That's not true, it's still a pretty different take on the genre, just like Paladins and Overwatch on the hero shooter genre, which I also have an article coming out about. (I like underdogs, what can I say).
I feel like we need to acknowledge those small studios like Phoenix Studios, who work really hard to push their games out. I've been following their fight to keep their servers up to today's standards and lower the queue time as fast as they could, working all nighters and trying their best to satisfy players. These guys deserve a lot of praise for what they've accomplished.
It also has a full controller port, so you can even play it far from your monitor, it's a very laid back game for those who are kind of burnt out of overly competitive game like LoL, Overwatch or even Fortnite for tryharders.
Be(ta) careful by the way !
The game is still in Beta, so be careful when playing this game. Do not expect an ultra polished experience. The game is pretty polished in its mechanics, yet, I've personally experienced a lot of bugs and crashes, endless loading screens, and according to the forums, I'm not the only one.
Conclusion
It's (again), a free game, with pretty fun gameplay, some in depth mechanics, and you can play it with friends, and to be fair, who doesn't want to go and hunt big monsters with your best mates. I've had a lot of fun so far, and I haven't reached the end game yet, and I've been told that it gets even harder, which seems like a pretty interesting challenge to me.
So yeah, go for it, you probably won't regret it.
As usual, thank you for reading me, I really appreciate it, check out my other stuff, and follow me on social media, share this article with your friends to convince them.
